Grandma to the Rescue

We were very blessed, my mom came to our rescue. When E was first born we thought all was well. N texted everyone "Mom and baby are doing well," and then we found out things weren't going so well. We noticed her face was rather blue, the midwives kept insisting it was from bruising from the birth, but N wasn't so sure, so they hooked her up to some machine that said her oxygen was really low. So he and the baby got a ride in the ambulance (E was born at a birthing center a few blocks from the hospital) while I got stitched up, then I got dropped off at the hospital an hour later where I was told our baby would have to stay on oxygen and antibiotics for a few days, I could stay in a little room off the special care nursery since I was a nursing mom, but I wasn't a patient and I'd have to take care of myself, and N couldn't stay with me. And we were given the unexpected news that they suspected our sweet little girl of having Downs Syndrome. So, there I was about 3 hours after giving birth, with no shower, no supplies, nothing and on my own at the hospital and trying not to cry over the unexpected news. N brought me everything he could then had to go home since the hospital wouldn't let him stay. I called my mom who, of course, thought everything was going great and got a shock when I started bawling about everything. She told my sweet dad who went to work and got her on a plane the next morning. (She wasn't supposed to come till Feb. 4th, and then was only going to stay for about 4 days.) So Mom arrived exactly 12 hours after E was born and literally saved us. E ended up in the hospital 8 days instead of the originally expected day or two and then came home on oxygen. She's still on oxygen. I ended up with an emergency room visit and several doctors visits myself because of a uterine infection and placenta still left inside of me--Hooray. =( She took great care of the boys and alternated back and forth with N coming to the hospital to take care of me (still not a patient though barely able to walk, but staying in that "camping room" at the hospital.) B said that "Grandma is Jesus here to take care of us." I thought it was so sweet. He and S really didn't like it when I'd come home to see them for a few hours then go back to the hospital. B was really upset when E came home with our hospital bands on. He kept telling me to take them off and started crying and pulling on mine to get it off. "This means you'll go back to the hospital! Get it off!!!"

We're so glad Mom came and miss her terribly! I'm finally starting to do better, we're hoping little E will be off oxygen soon, and yes, the lab tests came back with an official confirmation of Downs Syndrome. We know we're blessed to have such a special little girl in our family and that she doesn't seem to have any of the major health issues children like her normally have and we're grateful that Grandma would come and help us get ready to bring her home!
